Prof. Tin is a renowned linguist in the field of Modern Chinese.She graduated from the Chinese Department of Peking University and later from the Chinese Department of Shandong University with a postgraduate degree. She has been teaching and researching Chinese and Putonghua for 35 years in Hong Kong. In the 1980s and 1990s, she taught part-time at the University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the University of East Asia in Macau for more than ten years. From 2000 to 2009, she taught full-time at Lingnan University. During that time she worked as the Director of the Chinese Language Education and Assessment Centre and an Honorary Researcher of the Centre for Humanities Research. She had been an Executive Council Member of the International Society for Chinese Language Teaching and a Council Member of the International Association of Chinese Linguistics for more than ten years. She is currently a member of the National Advisory Committee for Putonghua Training and Assessment, a supervisor of doctoral students at Shandong University, and visiting professors at several universities. She is also the Academic Advisor of Chinese Language Standardization Council of Malaysia, the Vice President of Rhetoric Society of China, the Vice President of Chinese Language Society of Hong Kong, and the Advisor of Xianggang Putonghua Yanxishe (the Hong Kong Putonghua Research Society). Her published works include Language and Language Teaching, Grammar and Grammar in Teaching, Chinese and Teaching of Chinese, Modern Rhetoric of Chinese , Collected Papers on the Teaching of Chinese and Putonghua in Hong Kong, Collected Papers on Modern Chinese Teaching and Research, Tian Xiaolin’s Collected Papers on Linguistics, Dictionary of Hong Kong Community Words, Collected Papers on the Research of Hong Kong’s Language and Life, Collected Papers on the Use of Language and the Writing of Language, An Overview of Hong Kong’s Language and Its Writing, etc.. She co-authored Modern Chinese, Chinese Sentence Groups, Putonghua for the Disciplined Services, Putonghua for Medical Staff, etc..She organised the amendment of the Dictionary for Learning Modern Chinese (the traditional character version). She is an Editorial Board Member of World Chinese Dictionary and a special Editorial Board Member of the magazine of “To Be Particular about Wording“.
